August 2024 Newsletter

2024-08-22

As the lazy days of summer draw to a close and school schedules loom on the horizon, we still have plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors here in the Comox Valley. Cooler temperatures can be invigorating and rejuvenating for the creative process.

At the Pearl, we've been busy planning the schedule of exhibitions for 2025. We've received tremendous positive feedback from our juried concept shows and have four new themes planned for next year. While more detailed descriptions will follow, here’s a general idea of what’s to come:

  1. Photography and Digital Art,
  2. Return to Water,
  3. Duality, and
  4. Text.

Additionally, we’ll have four non-juried member shows and four juried “open” slots for solo or group exhibitions, rounding out the schedule. Whether you’re considering an ambitious solo spot or a project that fits one of our concept themes, now is the time to start planning for next year’s opportunities. The jury will meet this fall, and selections for the four open spots and the first concept show will be made by mid-November.

You can also consider signing up to display your work in one of our two satellite galleries: the Comox Library or the Comox Community Centre. The library has limited wall space but can accommodate ten to fifteen smaller works. At the Community Centre, we have access to seven display cases, each measuring four feet high by seven feet. Starting August 25th, the Comox Community Center will feature a vibrant art exhibition showcasing works by seven talented local artists: David Ballantyne, Lynn Sweetman, Linda Huibers, Valerie Parmley, Doris Wilson, Juanita Olson, and Pam Faunt. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore a diverse collection of styles and mediums from these incredible artists. Visit the Community Center 7 days a week.

Currently, at the main gallery, we’re showcasing the latest members’ show. We were able to accommodate all submissions and now have 62 unique and creative pieces on display, many of which are from new members. The opening reception is this Saturday, August 24th, from 1 to 3. Please consider dropping by.

Mark your calendars for our upcoming Giftables pop-up shop, running from November 12th to 23rd. This event invites artists and craftspeople to showcase affordable, handmade items perfect for holiday gift-giving. Please note there will be a maximum price cap for items and a small participation fee (details to come). Buyers can take their purchases home immediately, making this a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community. Applications open on October 1st, so start preparing your creations now!

We’re thrilled to see the word spreading about our wonderful little gallery, and it’s all thanks to those of you who share our posts on social media or talk about your experiences in the gallery with friends and acquaintances. That’s the power of community! For more information about any of our initiatives or about volunteering, drop us a line at pearlellisgallery@gmail.com.

As we look ahead to another exciting year of creativity and connection, we encourage you to stay involved, stay inspired, and keep sharing the beauty of art with our community. Thank you for being part of the Pearl Ellis Gallery family—we couldn’t do it without you. Here’s to the art and inspiration that lies ahead!

Sincerely,
Teresa Kachanoski
