Noah Crowder
Monster Boy

Monster Boy (Noah Crowder) is a Canadian artist, born and raised in the city of Victoria, the unceded lands of the lək̓ʷəŋən (la-gan-quin), Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ (saa-nich) peoples. He attended Camosun College for Visual Arts in 2014 and found that attending school for art actually made him reconsider art altogether. It wasn't until 2021 where he felt called back to it that he started seriously working in the Arts again.

Monster Boy creates fibre art sculptures that tell personal stories of my experiences with life, death and human performance. His art expresses how it feels to have a trans-male body, and how dehumanizing that can be, using the soft material to face the ‘soft-boy’ stereotype that comes along with being a transgender man. It’s important to Monster Boy because the medium is thought of as crafty. When he was in college, media such as this one were looked down upon. Finding that kinship in felt, he uses it to face his own fears of being viewed as more feminine for creating with textiles, even though art media are ultimately ungendered.  Through this, he works on the idea of dismantling unnecessary gender-biases for himself, and others who view the work.

Recently, Monster Boy has moved to the Comox Valley, and is looking forward to meeting and connecting with the art community.
