Triple Visions
McLoughlin Gardens Residency work by Glenn Gustafson, Thom Rypien and Brenda Kramarchuk
Pearl Ellis Gallery Oct 15, 2024 – Nov 09, 2024
Pearl Ellis Gallery proudly presents Triple Vision: Three Artists, Mediums, and Visions of the McLoughlin Gardens. In July 2022, three artists participated in a week-long residency at the McLoughlin Gardens, a stunning ocean-side retreat located just north of the Comox Valley. Using glass, fibre art, and photography, they captured their unique interpretations of the forest, ocean, and garden landscapes that define this beautiful location.
Thom Rypien brings his expertise in glass art to the exhibition, showcasing stained glass depictions of the three ecological zones at the Gardens, as well as smaller stained glass panels and fused glass scenes that highlight the area’s natural diversity.
Glenn Gustafson, who works in multiple mediums, focused his residency on free-form woven tapestries illustrating the Gardens’ landscapes. In collaboration with Brenda Kramarchuck, he also created hand-made seaweed paper and nature prints for a series of hand-bound books inspired by the Gardens.
Brenda Kramarchuck turned her lens to the three ecosystems on-site, capturing their beauty through photography. Alongside her visual work, she composed poetry reflecting her experience, culminating in a self-published book, McLoughlin Gardens – an Artist Residency, which will be displayed as part of the exhibit.
Together, these artists will present Triple Vision at the Pearl Ellis Gallery, organizing their artwork around the themes of Forest, Ocean, and Garden. Accompanying the artworks will be selected poetry displayed as wall hangings. Visitors will also find an introductory display of the history of McLoughlin Gardens. Smaller works for sale, including handmade books and curved glass pieces, will be featured throughout the gallery.
Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, October 19th, from 1 to 3 PM, where you can meet the artists and explore their captivating interpretations of this unique location.
