Members of the Pearl Ellis Art Gallery have responded to the call to bring in their brightest colours, to help lighten moods and the gallery walls during the dreariest days of winter. How individual artists interpret “bright colour” is the theme of the current exhibition, on display from January 28-February 15. Paintings, photography, fabric art and sculpture are included in the show and all work is available for purchase. …
The Pearl Ellis Art Gallery starts the new year with “Selections” by J.F. Janzen. The exhibition is about choices and – in this case – images that are part of the artist’s journey of change and growth over the past five years. A recent move to the Comox Valley from Victoria led Janzen to establish Studio Rivertown on his new property. It meshes, along with other ongoing projects, his impressions of the surrounding area from an environmental viewpoint with a deep need for concern for the planet. ”Selections” could be considered a familiarization of Janzen’s style of mark making.…

In her first solo exhibition, CG Swanson brings you on a journey down The Winding Path, exploring the imaginative, relational, and reflective opportunities trees provide. Come, picnic under the flowing willow while children laugh and play. Let the maple take your mind beyond the past and future, into something so vast you are everywhere and nowhere, so big you lose yourself completely. Be inspired by the tree that has cast off boundaries and limitations, living a situational reality in an unexpected way. Come, walk this winding path, imagine and explore.…

Mediterranean colours featured at the Pearl Ellis Gallery
The Pearl Ellis Gallery starts off the new year with “Now and Then: Paintings by Stephanie Wood” from January 8 to 26. Stephanie spent 25 years living on the island of Cyprus before moving back to Vancouver Island five years ago. This exhibition presents canvases contrasting the exuberant colours and strong Middle Eastern themes of one island with the healing greens and delicate leaf patterns of the other.
Included in the retrospective show is a world of Mediterranean magic gardens imbued with the spirit of the Creator in gratitude and celebration evident throughout Stephanie’s work. Tiny sailboats nestle in patches of vibrant foliage. Miniature Greek churches glow white on flat edged leaves. Fish fly serenely in groups through garden patios, and sometimes the odd living room.
Stephanie has had solo exhibitions in Cyprus, Israel, England and France. Her work hangs in these countries, as well as in Canada and the US. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria and now resides in Comox.…
